Where We Practice

The Stavroff Law Firm practices throughout the State of Ohio, with a specific focus on the central Ohio area. Every state has its own judicial system, with different names and levels of courts. The federal government has its own judicial system. Generally, state courts in Ohio hear cases involving violations of state law. Federal courts in Ohio hear cases involving violations of federal law. Both the state and federal courts in Ohio have three levels: the trial court, where cases are filed and trials take place; the courts of appeals, where challenges of the trial court decisions are heard; and the Supreme Courts of the Ohio and the United States, which are the highest courts of Ohio and the United States, respectively.

State Courts

TRIAL COURT. In the federal system, the trial courts are known as District Courts. The United States Congress establishes different districts in every state. In Ohio, there are two federal judicial districts: the Northern District and the Southern District. The district border goes roughly across the middle of Ohio. The Northern District Court has courts in Akron, Cleveland, and Toledo. The Southern District Court has courts in Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati.

COURT OF APPEALS. Like Ohio, the federal Courts of Appeals are divided into twelve areas called circuits. The federal Courts of Appeals hear challenged from cases in the District Courts. The federal Court of Appeals that hears cases originating from both of Ohio's District Courts is known as the Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit.

SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES. The Supreme Court of the United States in the United States's highest court. It hears challenges from cases decided by the Court of Appeals, among other types of challenges.

TRIAL COURT.  In Ohio, there are two different trial courts: Common Pleas Courts and Municipal Courts (sometimes known as County Courts). Every county has a Common Pleas Court and Municipal Court. Generally, the Common Pleas Courts deal with felony offenses and the Municipal Courts deal with misdemeanor offenses. Ohio is unique in that it has Mayor's Courts too. Mayor's Courts are informal courts in municipalities that hear only misdemeanor and traffic violations. Mayor's Courts can be established if the municipality has a population of more than 200 people. Mayor's Court decisions can be transferred to the local Municipal Court that covers the specific area.

COURT OF APPEALS. In Ohio, the Courts of Appeals are divided into twelve districts. The Courts of Appeals hear challenges from cases in the Common Pleas and Municipal Courts. (In Columbus, where The Stavroff Law Firm has its offices, the Court of Appeals is known as the 10th District Court of Appeals.)

SUPREME COURT OF OHIO. The Supreme Court of Ohio is Ohio's highest court. It hears challenges from cases decided by the Courts of Appeals. The Supreme Court of Ohio is also the government entity that regulates the practice of law for Ohio lawyers.
