Did You Know It's Illegal to Drive with Headphones in Ohio?
Wearing headphones while driving has been identified as a dangerous behavior while operating a motor vehicle. “Wearing earbuds or headphones, while driving could intensify your sensory deprivation and cognitive distraction level, potentially creating additional dangers on our roadways,” states Cindy Antrican, Public Affairs Manager for AAA.
In the state of Ohio, it isn't just a dangerous behavior, it is illegal.
This law has been in effect since 1989, yet many people in Ohio are unaware of the law. A violation of the law is currently classified as a misdemeanor of the third degree. Wearing your headphones while driving also increases your risk of being pulled over by law enforcement, which can lead to other charges.
This law does not apply to any person wearing a hearing aid or law enforcement personnel while they are duty. To learn more about the law, read the full text here in the Ohio Revised Code § 4511.84.
